It is my great pleasure to welcome the online visitors of CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI), Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
I am indeed pleased to place on record that I have successfully completed three years as Director CSIR-CGCRI on 5
th August 2018. My journey in these two years
has been very challenging as the CSIR itself has witnessed many changes in its function and administration. As one of the premier R&D institute of the Council
of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) established in the year 1950, the Institute has been working to fulfill its mandate and mission to provide R&D
support in the area of glass, ceramics and related materials that maximizes the economic, environmental and societal benefits for the people of India. As a
first initiative towards the transformation of CSIR, which initiated with Dehradun declaration in 2015, we had an open RC in December 2015, to identify
transferable technologies for further development and commercialization. As a continuation of this initiative, CSIR has implemented Fast Track Translational
(FTT) projects in various sectors. I am very happy that seven of our proposals have been approved by CSIR for translational research under the FTT program
which are given in our website. These projects have the background of matured R&D efforts and are poised to provide faster realization of products/technologies
in the near future. In addition, the Institute also initiated projects under CSIR 800 programmes in areas of drinking water, water quality monitoring and
skill developments. Like previous years, during this period also, CSIR-CGCRI has played a key role in country’s strategic sector through the development of
various strategic materials for department of atomic energy (DAE), defence research and development organisation (DRDO) and Indian space research organisation
(ISRO). The Outreach Centres at Khurja and Naroda continues to contribute to skill development programmes among ceramic industry personnel and artisans of the
respective regions.
In addition to various technological developments, we have also been maintaining a steady profile in terms of research publications in high impact SCI journals
as you could see from the R&D highlights. We have also signed MOUs with many firms. The institute is also equipped with many advanced characterization
facilities as demonstrated in the new website. You are welcome to contact us to know more about the R&D facilities available in the institute.
During the last two years many dignitaries visited our institute such as Hon’ble Union Minister of Science, Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Harsh Vardhan,
who is also the Vice President of CSIR on February 8, 2016. In addition we also witnessed the visit of Members of Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) on
Science & Technology, Environment and Forests, visited CSIR-CGCRI on October 21, 2016 and Dr V.K Saraswat Member, Niti Ayog on January 24, 2017. The institute
has also been part of the Technology Vision 2035 document that has been released in our institute in July 2016.
The inter-disciplinary combination of highly competent
Team CSIR-CGCRI also caters to the huge and ever-growing needs of various R&D Sectors of the country in
the areas of advanced glass, oxide and non-oxide ceramics, bio-ceramics, sensors and actuators and structural ceramics and composites.
Our homepage gives an overview of the information about both R&D and non-R&D activities that are being carried out in CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata, Khurja and Naroda
Centres. I welcome you to explore the website for more information on various activities that are being carried out in our institute in various disciplines.
We, as a CSIR community are committed to rededicate ourselves and work together for the success of the various programmes that we have initiated which will
result in the development of technologies and products for the benefit of the industry, strategic sector and the society.
Jai Bharat.
